RIVER UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED

3-year-old troubled yet absolutely gorgeous Labrador x Cattle Dog ‘River’ was in our care for 15 months.

He loved his time in foster care, but due to his ongoing issues ended up living at our shelter for 6 months. We were beginning to think he would become yet another permanent resident…

Then one day we heard from Lynne, who had adopted 4yo Labrador ‘Toby’ from CAWI in 2014. Lynne had since relocated to Gin Gin (west of Bundaberg in Queensland) and Toby had sadly passed away. She was struggling to find another companion dog when she saw River’s profile on our website.

Lynne felt she had the experience and time to provide River with a great life with plenty of training, socialisation and rehabilitation.

Beyond thrilled, we organised to meet halfway in early December. Angeji the Basenji and I picked River up and drove for 3 hours to meet Lynne in Eumundi. River’s behaviour on the journey was exemplary 😍

River certainly presented Lynne with some challenges but 6 months later she writes “He is a beautiful boy and doing brilliantly; much better on the lead and good at the beach. He is still such a puppy and continues to carry on like a delinquent in the car, screeching at cyclists, cows, horses and people walking their dogs 😂😂😂 He’s perfect at home, loves his huge yard and is still crazy about his tennis balls”.

We are so happy that River has found his place and beyond appreciative for Lynne’s perseverance 🙏

Happy life River 👍😘

Gidday, my name is ‘River’ and I’m a bustling, healthy desexed male 1-year-7-months-old Labrador cross.

My family have had to move from a huge farm to a small suburban block with 3 dogs. They were devastated to surrender me, but felt I wouldn’t cope with a tiny yard, when I’ve been enjoying a massive property to run free on. They love me and I sure love them and the tears flowed at our parting 😿😢

Lucky for very sad me, Shell & ‘Angeji the Basenji’ from BDR picked me up and mollycoddled and sang to me all the way on the big trip back to the coast. I then met my super kind foster-carer Donna and her big black dog.

I was totally freaked out to begin with ‘cos I’d never been off my farm and hadn’t socialised with unfamiliar dogs. Donna & Romeo were so patient and compassionate though and I soon let all my anxieties melt away and began to enjoy playing and couch-surfing!

I’ve always been an outdoor dog so I LOVED trying out all the couches and Donna even let me sleep on one. Unfortunately I had some accidents inside and am doing my best to learn some manners 😏💩

I will need some basic training, but I’m an absolute sweetheart and I always sit & wait for my dinner. I love kids, have lived with a cat, but I’m naughty around chickens.

I went to the beach yesterday for the first time in my life… wow, what fun that was!! And I’m told I was a very good boy, socialising well and staying with my people.
