PANDA UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED

11-month-old Kelpie x Catahoula Leopard Dog ‘Panda’ (now ‘Bandit’) was a challenge from the get-go!

Combine the smarts and immense energy of a Kelpie with the ancient hunting capacity and dogged-determination of a Catahoula, and you’ve got quadruple-trouble 😅😆

Due to a lack of dog socialisation, Bandit could also display sudden, unpredictable and frightening resource guarding aggression. On the flip-side, he’s clever, affectionate and charming… a real Jekyll & Hyde.

Six years ago, Kim & Ray, who live on 70-acres of lush rolling hills and beautiful dams, had fostered, rehabilitated and adopted two of our very challenging Kelpies – Molly and Archie. Kim & Ray’s gentle, loving skilfulness with these dogs was amazing… I decided to give them a call and enquire whether they’d be up for another challenge. Sure, said Kim, bring him out, we’ll foster him.

Less than two weeks later I received a call from Kim – “we’ve re-named him ‘Bandit’, Ray also sometimes affectionately refers to him as ‘Terror’ – and we’re going to adopt him”.

As it turns out, Bandit settled in quickly with Molly and Archie (his new best mate), walks well on-leash now, conducts himself admirably with the cattle and horses and completely stole Kim’s heart!

She said, I’ve had dogs since I was 10 and Bandit is the cleverest dog I’ve ever known. I love him so much. I’m like a teenager with my first boyfriend, always trying to please and charm him. I’m completely besotted and he’s such a gorgeous good boy.

Well, I wouldn’t have believed it unless I’d heard and seen it with my own eyes! Well done Bandit, you clever, clever, lucky boy!!  👏❤

7-month-old desexed male Kelpie x ‘Panda’ is looking for a new home.

Panda is well loved and beautifully cared for, but his energy level is through the roof.

Panda does enjoy a calm environment and can relax, rest well and be a loving, affectionate companion. He can also be left at home alone and is crate-trained. He is a clever boy, having learnt to use talking dog-buttons, where he can communicate his desires eg. play, food, outside, rest, scratch etc

He is great with children and other dogs, although very bouncy & boisterous. He does have some resource/food guarding issues with other dogs, but not with his humans. He loves to chase birds, so currently not suitable around farm birds or fowl.

He needs a few more months of intensive training, especially related to his outside-world recall and focus.

Panda is an excellent family or companion dog, but will need space to run & play and owners who have the time & skill to continue with his training.
